A Google Business Profile Audit You Can Practise Without Changing a Listing
Review business information, service clarity, photos and enquiry routes using an evidence-based local SEO worksheet.
A local listing audit should begin with accuracy. The most polished description is of little use if the address is old, the phone is wrong or the advertised service is unavailable. You can practise auditing a public profile without taking control of it or making edits. This exercise focuses on observation, questions for the owner and evidence. It does not ask you to invent locations, buy reviews or treat a profile as a shortcut around the actual quality of a business.

Confirm you are looking at the right business
Businesses can share names or have multiple branches. Compare the profile’s website, telephone, location and public branding before recording findings. Note discrepancies rather than guessing which address is correct. If a business has moved, the owner needs to confirm the current position. Keep the review date in your worksheet. Public information can be outdated, and a student audit should not accidentally turn that uncertainty into a fresh directory listing or an asserted fact on another website.
Check whether the offer is understandable
Read the category, services, description and website destination together. Could a first-time visitor explain what the business does? If the profile describes training but the website opens a generic marketing agency page, record that mismatch. Some businesses operate at customers’ premises; others serve visitors at a staffed location. Eligibility and address presentation depend on the real operation and platform rules. Ask the owner to verify the appropriate setup instead of creating an address simply to target a city.
Review photographs for usefulness
A photograph should help someone understand the business, place, product or service. Genuine facilities and team photographs can answer practical questions. A stock classroom image cannot prove where teaching happens. Check whether images are sharp, current and relevant without inferring someone’s origin from appearance. If the only available visuals are generic, request real material. Your audit can list a photo brief: entrance, signage, learning area, accessible approach or a product demonstration, depending on the business.
Read reviews as questions to investigate
Look for repeated themes about communication, appointments, product quality or support. Do not copy a few reviews and declare a business flawless. A platform rating belongs with its platform and source; it is not interchangeable with a trainer’s separate rating. If you suggest using excerpts, preserve their meaning and verify attribution. Ask the owner how feedback is collected and addressed. Reviews are useful evidence, but they should sit alongside accurate operational information and a functioning enquiry route.
Test the next step without sending an unwanted enquiry
Follow the website and phone links, inspect opening information and check the enquiry form fields. You can observe whether the links are valid without placing a call or submitting personal data. With the owner’s permission, run a clearly labelled test and confirm the response process. Document which actions were observed and which were tested. The difference matters: a form that looks good on a screen may still fail to save an enquiry or notify the person responsible for admissions.
Worked example
- Observed issue
- Profile address differs from the website.
- Evidence
- Dated screenshots of both public pages.
- Owner question
- Which location is current and eligible to be displayed?
- Recommended next step
- Verify the operation, then update the authoritative details consistently.
Try it yourself
Choose a real business with a public profile and inspect five areas: identity, services, contact details, photographs and enquiry journey. Record three observations supported by screenshots, three questions for the owner and three improvements. Do not make edits unless authorised. Finish with a one-page audit that distinguishes confirmed facts from assumptions. A careful audit with honest limits is a stronger portfolio sample than a fabricated ranking improvement.
Questions learners ask
Can an online business create a profile in every city it serves?
Do not assume it can. Check Google’s current eligibility rules and the business’s actual operation.
Should I contact reviewers for my student project?
No. Public review analysis does not require contacting reviewers or collecting their personal details.
